Sax Rohmer at his best could build a moody, atmospheric setup with the best of them. I find the solutions to his mystery/adventures less satisfying. This one is no different. Many of his works were steeped in Egyptology and mysterious Eastern influences, and he used those (now cliched) devices to good effect in this book. His writing is slapdash and the book's quality lessens as it goes along, but it was still a decent representation of his work.Product details

The Green Eyes of Bâst Sax Rohmer Pixabay 9781542988780 Books Reviews
This is a recent edition as this was originally written in 1920. The story is unique and time/era sensitive which makes it utterly fascinating. I have read many of his books and truly loved every one. Great mysteries with original characters and a super plot.
It was an interesting read with an unusual flavor for your complicated genius mystery. It however relies heavily on racist and sexist ideas for its characterizations and a few key facts regarding medical knowledge and history are severely outdated and in some cases simply wrong, particularly those related to ancient Egypt and the appearance of Anubis.
The Green Eyes of Bast is just a good yarn from the creator of Fu Manchu. And, it takes place in Eygpt, Sax Rohmer's favorite destination. I wonder about the sudden end of the book. Did Rohmer get tired of writing the story and just put an end to it, or did he have a sequel in mind? Nevertheless, enjoy. The green-eyed cat woman is out there somewhere.
The story is just shy of a hundred years old, so you may find it more quaint than you like, but it's a product of the heyday of the pulps, and that's a good thing. It's a thoroughly entertaining story with a mysterious creature, strange occult artifacts, some puzzling murders, and a hero who's in over his head but determined to go down swinging. It's a fun read, a cool story of high adventure and mystery told in a classic pulp-fiction style. If you like the pulps, this is a strong example of the genre.
This is the first book of Sax Rohmer I have read, and I will certainly search out the others. If you are looking for an old fashioned murder mystery set before WWI this one will do the trick. It has a bit of every thing a dapper young hero, an intrepid Scotland Yard detective, a mad Eurasian doctor, a veiled lady and enough action and adventure to keep you turning the page long into the night. Into the mix add a mysterious statuette of the Goddess Bast, and we have a good read. It is fast moving, and though somewhat incredible, is believable enough for a good imagination. Enjoy!
I'll go five stars on this one. OK, throw political correctness out the door, and, bring on the stereotyping of persons by national and ethnic origin; I'm good with that. Once you get past those slight hindrances, you are off and running on a wild ride to find out who the killer, or killers are, and why? There is action, mystery, and a certain sense of adventure here that doesn't fit the mold of a pure murder mystery, then again, neither is it purely an adventure yarn. This is one of those stories that is a very definite "tweener," neither pure murder mystery or pure fantasy and adventure, it seems to fall squarely in the middle.
So let us forget where it falls in the literary genre and concentrate on what we know for sure about it; the book is well written, the plot is very well conceived, and the mystery is certainly mysterious. The story can therefore be described as fast paced, enjoyable, and more than a little eerie at times.
For free on , this one is well worth the time. Maybe you can get your money back if you wake up in a cold sweat with green eyes glaring at you from the darkness?
If you have never read Sax Rohmer before and are thinking of reading one of his books, this is a great novel (along with "The Golden Scorpion") with which to start. Sax Rohmer's "The Green Eyes of Bâst" (free for s) is a fast paced mystery which contains all of the mysterious elements of the classical mystery the naive hero, the mysterious women, dark nights and a lonely house, the "mad doctor," a mysterious car, Scotland Yard and, of course, a body found in a crate. With the body is found a statue of a woman with the head of a cat, and we are left with the question what is the significance of this mysterious statuette of the Goddess Bâst? This is a well constructed mystery and it is definitely worth the read; if you have a , the price is right! However, Sax Rohmer is most famous for creating the infamous character of Fu Manchu who later became even more famous in the black and white movies of the 30's. Fu Manchu was portrayed in various films by Boris Karloff in the 1930's. Several of the first Fu Manchu novels are also available for free on the or search out the actual books in used bookstores - they are worth the time to discover the great, intellectual (and stereotypical) evil genius who is Fu Manchu.
